The Director of Emergency Medical Programs is an administrative role that reports to the Dean – Health Sciences and is responsible for the administration of all Emergency Medical programs/courses. The Director must follow the guidelines of the NC OEMS for educational programs and work closely with local Emergency Services Agencies to provide training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Oversee the administration, organization and supervision of the EMS program. To include:
-Develop and administer the NCOEMS advanced teaching institution education plan for Surry Community college.
-Plan, schedule and supervise all emergency medical courses, including certification, recertification, and continuing education courses.
-Prepare and administer an approved EMS program that meets the NCOEMS, CoAEMPS, and CAAHEP requirements.
-Evaluating the effectiveness of the instruction, faculty and overall program.
2. Lead continuous quality review and improvement of the EMS program. To include:
-Ensure the most up-to-date and appropriate educational program course materials and delivery methods.
-Develop and monitor the administration of program quality assurance policies and procedures.
-Coordinate education program outcome/performance evaluation based on established institutional critical success factors with the Medical Director.
-Evaluating the effectiveness of the instruction, faculty and overall program.
3. Monitor and ensure compliance with NCOEMS, CoAEMPS, CAAHEP, and the SCC educational program entrance and performance requirements.
4. Maintain a professional working relationship with the area medical establishments and other related emergency agencies.
5. Develop contracts, agreements, and placement options for required clinical education and field experience.
6. Coordinate and manage required contracts and external program agreements for compliance with OEMS standards of educational institutions.
7. Work in partnership with Occupational Programs in Surry and Yadkin County to plan programs to benefit the entire college service area.
8. Work in partnership with the Director of Center for Public Safety to plan programs and class space locations.
9. Responsible for long range planning and ongoing development of the program. Plan and implement new courses of instruction to meet the changing educational needs of the EMS students.
10. Ensure the effectiveness of the program by evaluating instruction and faculty/staff performance.
-Visit classes and record the evaluation/verification as outlined by the Accountability and Credibility Plan for WTCE.
11. Collaborative involvement with the Education Medical Advisor.
12. Oversee faculty and staff. To include:
-Recruit, interview, and recommend qualified full-time and part-time faculty and staff for employment.
-Approve qualifications and coordinate activities of program faculty and staff to include instructors, evaluators, and preceptors.
-Orient, train, and supervise clinical and field internship preceptors.
– Develop and coordinate faculty/staff development and training activities.
-Serve as a resource to instructors—-mentoring and evaluating instructor proficiency in the didactic and practical setting.
-Assist instructors with the selection and securing of educational materials, including textbooks, software, and equipment.
13. Provide classroom instruction as needed to fill in for classroom instructional vacancies.
14. Serve as a resource to students. Mentoring and evaluating student proficiency in the didactic, practical, and remedial settings.
15. Recruit, counsel, and advise students and potential students through community programs, telephone contact, and one-on-one counseling.
16. Develop and coordinate remediation and other student support services as needed.
17. Approve and maintain sufficient levels of training equipment and supplies.
18. Manage student WTCE records and submit initial and re-credentialing materials to the NCOEMS.
19. Oversee the development and coordination of the administration of standard student evaluation processes and methods.
20. In collaboration with the Dean, write proposals or grants for the enhancement or expansion of the program as needed.
21. Oversee the effectiveness and quality of fulfillment of responsibilities delegated to other qualified individuals.
22. Attend instructional staff meetings, regional/state director’s meetings, conferences, and other staff development activities.
23. Serve as an active member on the local and state committees related to EMS and Emergency Services education including the EMS Region I Training Committee and the Surry County EMS Quality Management Committee.
24. Serve on the State Office of EMS competition committee and host the preliminary Paramedic competition for the State each year onsite. Serve as the competition assistant at the yearly EMS conference hosted by the NCOEMS.
25. Participate actively in the college planning process and serve on the college committees as assigned.
26. Participate in all Oral Review Boards.
27. Teaching a reduced load of 6-9 hours per week.
Teaching responsibilities include:
1. Conducting in a professional manner all class hours as assigned.
2. Creating, administering, and accurately assessing substantive assignments and activities that require critical thinking.
3. Meeting classes on time and for the full duration of the published class time.
4. Attending all mandatory divisional and college-wide meetings.
5. Supporting and following college policies and procedures.
