EMS Clinical Coordinator – Mitchell Community College

The EMS Clinical Coordinator plays a key role in managing and coordinating the clinical education and field training components of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programs at Mitchell Community College. The incumbent will be actively involved in both Paramedic and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) programs. This role requires strict adherence to the clinical education components mandated by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (NCOEMS) and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CoAEMSP). The Clinical Coordinator ensures students receive high-quality clinical and field experiences to prepare them for success in the EMS profession.

Clinical Coordination:

Establish and maintain partnerships with clinical sites, including hospitals, EMS agencies, and other healthcare facilities.
Develop clinical rotation schedules and assign students to appropriate clinical and field experiences in alignment with NCOEMS and CoAEMSP standards.
Monitor student performance during clinical rotations and ensure compliance with program standards, site requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
Serve as a liaison between the college and clinical/field partners to address concerns, feedback, or improvements.

Instructional Support:

Actively support the delivery of Paramedic and EMT programs, including assisting with instruction in the classroom, skills lab, and simulation environments as needed.
Mentor and support students during their clinical and field experiences to ensure learning outcomes are achieved.
Collaborate with the EMS Program Director to ensure curriculum alignment with NCOEMS and CoAEMSP requirements.

Compliance & Documentation:

Ensure all clinical agreements are current and meet NCOEMS and CoAEMSP accreditation standards.
Maintain accurate records of clinical hours, evaluations, and documentation required for state and national accreditation.
Prepare and submit reports related to clinical education outcomes and participate in program reviews.

Related Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the EMS Program Director to assess and improve clinical education experiences for Paramedic and EMT students.
Participate in recruitment and retention efforts for the EMS programs.
Stay updated on advancements in EMS education, clinical practices, and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate onboarding and orientation for students entering clinical rotations, ensuring compliance with NCOEMS and CoAEMSP-mandated requirements.
Manage compliance tracking for student requirements, such as immunizations, background checks, and certifications.
Schedule and conduct meetings with clinical preceptors and field training officers to maintain program quality.
Promote the College’s mission, values, and vision.
Communicate effectively with program faculty and staff, clinical sites and agencies.
Schedules and supervises students for clinical rotations for the Paramedic Program in a timely manner. Clinical schedule should be complete one week prior to when the class begins the clinical rotations.
Confirms the clinical schedule with the clinical sites in writing.
Orients all preceptors to a level that is acceptable to the CoAEMSP.
Supervise students in the clinical areas during clinical rotation.
Utilize FISDAP to monitor clinical and field experiences.
Assist in the evaluation of student clinical clearance process.
Evaluates student information and provides appropriate feedback in a timely manner.
Develop and maintain clinical/field internship sites and relationships.
Participate in departmental and divisional orientation and training sessions.
Completes other duties and assignments as directed which support the mission and initiatives of the college.

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in technology and software used for managing clinical education (e.g., scheduling platforms, learning management systems).
Knowledge of state and national EMS standards and accreditation requirements, including NCOEMS and CoAEMSP.
Knowledge of medical terminology consistent with the position of a Paramedic.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Clinical Coordinator Best Practices per CoAEMSP.
The ability to travel to clinical sites.
Flexibility to work evenings or weekends as needed to meet program demands.
Ability to self-motivate and have excellent organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and successfully in multi-disciplinary teams.

Required Education and Experience:

Associate’s degree in Emergency Medical Services or a related field required (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
Current North Carolina Paramedic certification or the ability to obtain one prior to hire.
Level I EMS Instructor credential from NCOEMS or the ability to obtain prior to hire (Level II preferred).
AHA Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
AHA Instructor certifications in Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certifications with instructor certification preferred or within one year.
Minimum of three years of clinical experience as a paramedic, with prior teaching or clinical education experience preferred.
Minimum of 2 years of experience as an EMS educator or related experience.
Experience in coordinating clinical or field education in an EMS or healthcare setting is highly desirable.

Additional Information
Surrounding/Environment:

Primarily work indoors in an office or learning environment with moderate noise levels. Clinical work may be performed off site and in inclement weather.

Physical Effort:

Duties may include standing, walking, sitting, moderate lifting, manual dexterity, equipment operation, and computer screen exposure. They may occasionally handle up to 15 pounds. They must have good audio-visual perception for observations, reading, writing, equipment operation, and communication.

Schedule:

This position requires the Coordinator to be present on campus and/or at a medical, business, and industry location daily for teaching, learning, or administrative responsibilities in accordance with the College’s Curriculum Faculty Workload Policy. This is a full-time position (37.5 hours a week). Normal working hours are dependent on the demand and request for services and may include day, evening, or weekend hours.

Travel:

Local travel between campuses, medical, businesses, industry locations, and elementary, middle, and high schools may be required. In-state and out-of-state travel is limited but may be necessary for professional development, training, conferences, and workshops.
