Duties and Responsibilities
• Responding to fire alarms city-wide and in the ETJ and as a first responder in emergency situations
• Providing basic and advanced life support services
• Coordinating emergency care procedures with physicians
• Performing and participating in technical rescues to include land and water operations
• Driving and/or operating various medical and fire apparatus
• Assisting with hazardous material incidents
• Assisting in maintaining fire apparatus, ambulances and equipment, cleaning fire stations and grounds
• Presenting programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics
• Preparing and maintaining reports related to operations, training, and professional development
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency medical care
• Knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to fire suppression
• Knowledge of technical firefighting principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression
• Knowledge of hazardous materials, accident extrication principles and technical rescue techniques
• The ability to work at heights and in confined spaces
• The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical personnel, law enforcement, other Fire-EMS agencies, associates and the general public
The position requires a high school diploma or GED and moderate experience in emergency services including experience as a Firefighter/Paramedic. Possession of:
• IFSAC or Pro-Board NC Firefighter II Certification
• Paramedic Certification (or minimum EMT Certification)
• Technical Rescue Certification
• Hazardous Materials Operations Certification
• Valid unrestricted NC Class B Driver’s License
Background/drug tests and NC SBI background clearance required. Applicants must be able to obtain NFPA 1582 required physical clearance (testing date to be determined).
The salary range for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic is $69,864 – $97,810; the salary range for Firefighter/EMT is $63,513-$88,918**. Placement within range will depend upon a candidate’s successful qualifications and experience.
