The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Refresher Course is designed for individuals seeking to renew an active EMT credential or regain certification after a lapse. This course follows the most current North Carolina Office of EMS (NCOEMS) EMT Refresher Education Program curriculum and the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) National EMS Education Standards.
The course consists of 80 hours for students with an active credential and 88 hours for students whose credentials have expired. Delivery is primarily online, supplemented by four mandatory on-site sessions. An additional optional on-site day will be available for students needing a summative practical evaluation due to a lapsed credential or those who wish to take the NR exam. As part of the course, students will complete certifications in American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers, the NAEMT EMS Safety course, and the NAEMT Emergency Vehicle Operator Safety (EVOS) course. Successful completion of these certification components is mandatory to pass the refresher course. Students who already hold an active certification in any of these areas are still required to complete the course components in full to be eligible to pass. Students with an active EMT credential who successfully complete all course requirements will meet the standards to renew their North Carolina state and National Registry (NR) certifications. Students with a lapsed credential who successfully complete the course will be eligible to challenge the North Carolina EMT state certification examination.
