Iredell County EMS Deputy Director

An employee in this class assists in the management and direction of the Emergency Medical Services
Department, with emphasis on supervising daily operations of the service, dealing with shift supervisors and
field crews and dealing with situations occurring in the service. Work includes supervising field crews working
throughout various stations and substations in the County, and supervising the Assistant Director, Operations
Office, Logistics Officer, and Shift Captains, and the functions those positions oversees. The employee assists
the Director in planning and implementing activities such as leadership, budgeting, grants management,
expenditure monitoring, and in dealing with complaints, and heading special projects for emergency medical
system improvement. Work also includes evaluating effectiveness of transportation, communications, facilities
and systems of emergency medical care and participating in system planning and projection of needs, service
expansion and delivery, while overseeing daily operations through intervening supervisors and field training
officers. Personnel supervision includes ensuring comprehensive certified emergency medical services;
overseeing program staff and overseeing hiring, performance evaluations and discipline.

The employee has extensive public contacts and must exercise considerable tact and courtesy in dealing with
officials at the local, state, and federal levels, all facets of insurance providers, government subsidized and
private EMS providers, non-traditional EMS practice facilities, and in general dealings with the public. Work is
subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, noise, vibrations,
hazards associated with emergency medical work including exposures to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor
ventilation, and oils. Because of the nature of the work, the employee is exposed to human blood and is subject
to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision by the
EMS Director, with technical input from the Medical Director, and is evaluated through conferences,
observations, and feedback from citizens and staff
