Morehead City Fire & EMS – Firefighter/Paramedic

FULL-TIME FIREFIGHTER-PARAMEDIC

The TOWN OF MOREHEAD CITY, located on the beautiful Crystal Coast in eastern North Carolina, is currently seeking a qualified candidate for the full-time position of FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC. Morehead City is the largest incorporated town in Carteret County with over 16,625 residents in the City limits and extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ), encompassing 16.85 square miles of land area. Morehead City Fire-EMS Department provides advanced life support services to residents and visitors, responding to over 4,700 calls for service annually. Although Firefighter/Paramedic is preferred, all levels will be considered. Applicants with a valid State or National EMS certification of EMT or higher, are also encouraged to apply.

The position of Firefighter/Paramedic job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating, salvage work and first response in emergency situations

• Provides basic and advanced life support services

• Coordinates emergency care procedures with physicians

• Performs and participates in technical rescues to include land and water operations

• Drives and/or operates various medical and fire apparatus

• Assists with hazardous materials incidents

• Assists in maintaining fire apparatus, ambulances and equipment, cleaning fire station and grounds

• Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics

• Prepares and maintains reports related to operations, training and professional development

The ideal candidate will possess:

• Knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency medical care

• Knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to fire suppression

• Knowledge of technical firefighting principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression

• Knowledge of hazardous materials, accident extrication principles and technical rescue techniques

• The ability to work at heights and in confined spaces

• The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical personnel, law enforcement, other Fire-EMS agencies, associates and the general public

The position requires a high school diploma or GED and moderate experience in emergency services including experience as a Firefighter/Paramedic. Possession of:

• IFSAC or Pro-Board NC Firefighter II Certification

• Paramedic Certification (or minimum EMT Certification)

• Technical Rescue Certification

• Hazardous Materials Operations Certification

• Valid unrestricted NC Class B Driver’s License

Background/drug tests and NC SBI background clearance required. Applicants must be able to obtain NFPA 1582 required physical clearance (testing date to be determined).

The salary range for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic is $69,864 – $97,810; the salary range for Firefighter/EMT is $63,513-$88,918**. Placement within range will depend upon a candidate’s successful qualifications and experience.
