Position Title: Paramedic Captain
Work Schedule: 96 Hours On / 192 Hours Off
FLSA Status: Exempt (NC Fee-Exempt Executive/Administrative/Professional Category)
Reports To: EMS Chief or Designee
Location: Hyde County Emergency Services
Summary:
The Paramedic Captain serves in a leadership role within Hyde County Emergency Services, providing direct supervision, advanced patient care, and administrative oversight. This position requires advanced clinical knowledge, instructional experience, and the ability to make high-level decisions affecting personnel and operations. The Paramedic Captain is expected to operate with a high degree of independence and discretion in matters of significance, including quality assurance, crew management, and organizational direction.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational and Clinical Duties:
• Responds to emergency calls and provides advanced life support care in accordance with NCOEMS protocols.
• Directs scene operations and assumes command when necessary to ensure coordinated, safe, and effective responses.
• Oversees shift-level operations and daily crew activities, ensuring optimal performance and readiness.
• Acts as the senior-most on-duty provider and administrative authority during assigned rotation.
Administrative and Supervisory Duties:
• Conducts continuous QA/QI reviews of PreMIS Patient Care Reports (PCRs) to ensure documentation compliance and clinical quality.
• Provides on-duty clinical training and instruction to EMS personnel; develops and delivers continuing education and scenario-based learning.
• Participates in recruitment, selection, and performance evaluations; has the authority to make recommendations for hiring and termination.
• Ensures compliance with county and state regulations and all agency policies and procedures.
• Exercises independent judgment and discretion in planning and carrying out duties of considerable significance to the organization.
Leadership and Program Development:
• Serves as a liaison between field crews and EMS leadership to maintain communication, morale, and operational integrity.
• Collaborates with EMS leadership in planning and implementing system improvements and response strategies.
• Contributes to administrative projects, policy development, and operational planning.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Current North Carolina Paramedic Certification.
• Minimum of 5 years field experience as a paramedic, with at least 2 years in leadership, training capacity, or relevant experience.
• Documented experience in EMS instruction, training, or educational coordination.
• Strong working knowledge of QA/QI processes and NC PreMIS documentation standards.
• Valid NC Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
• North Carolina Level I or II EMS Instructor certification.
• Experience with administrative functions, policy development, or organizational planning.
• Familiarity with applicable federal, state, and local EMS regulations and standards.
Working Conditions:
• This position follows a 96 hours on / 192 hours off rotating schedule.
• Duties performed in both field and administrative office environments.
• Must be able to function in high-stress environments and rapidly changing situations.
• This position must be physically able to perform heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or over 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body.
• Requires mental acuity, including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of writing and the spoken word, and the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, perform accounting functions, operate a computer terminal, operate a motor vehicle, occasionally under emergency conditions, at high speeds for prolonged periods of time.
• Work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. The employee is subject to hazards in the emergency medical services work, including working in both inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, hazardous fumes, dust, odors, mist, and gases, and working in close quarters. Work may expose the employee to human blood or body fluids, and thus the job is subject to the OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens.
